The stun gun is one of the most popular self-defense tools because it is able to stop an attacker without creating long-term damage. Traditionally, it is five to eight inches long and has a voltage ranging from 100,000 to 775,000 volts. One notable example of the traditional stun gun is the brand Stun Master. The Stun Master has been on the market since 1994 and although the stun gun market is highly competitive, it remains a key brand due to its durability, and quality as evidenced by its Lifetime Warranty.
In recent years, the design has become increasingly innovative. There is the Blast Knuckles, a device that goes around your hand and allows you to stun the attacker directly with 950,000 volts. These devices are easy to wear and ideal for joggers to use and are an example of how these are designed with the consumers' needs and various demographics in mind. Similar to the Blast Knuckles is the Double Trouble which can shock from two ends at once and is extremely effective due to the space between the two ends.
There are also expandable stun batons, which combine two self-defense features in one. These batons can be expanded and retracted so that the user can push the attacker away and use the device from a further distance. One example is the Telescopic Stun Baton that is 13 inches when collapsed but can expand to 21.5 inches.
Recently the size of stun guns has decreased while the voltage has increased. In the past it was powered by 9-volt batteries so as the voltage increased more batteries were needed. However, lithium batteries, which are much smaller, are now used. In addition, there are increasingly amounts of stun devices with rechargeable batteries.
The classic small stun gun was the Talon Mini that was popular for many years; now, there is the Runt line. These 3.5 inch tall devices are easy to carry and hold and have up to 950,000 volts. Voltages have been increasingly rapidly and there are models with over 1,000,000 volts that are the size of a bar of soap. The higher voltage create crackling sounds when activated, which in itself can be a deterrent. The higher voltage means that it works more quickly and that the current can pass through more clothing. It is generally accepted that the shopper should buy the highest voltage they feel comfortable carrying.
There are many examples of small, high-powered stun guns. There is the Stun Master Hot Shot, which is 3 inches long and has 975, 000 volts. The rechargeable Small Fry holds 1,000,000 volts but is only 3.25 inches tall. These smaller models have the obvious convenience of portability and are ideal for women or those with smaller hands; they also have the advantage of surprise in emergency situations.
Concealed stun guns are still very popular. The 'original' concealed stun guns were those disguised as cell phones. Today even these have integrated bolder colors and more designs to look more like the cell phones of today; they have designs that mirror camera phones and are growing increasingly small. Now there are stun guns disguised as a Pen, such as the Stun Pen, which holds 800,000 volts.
These new models give shoppers a wider variety to choose from when purchasing. Some may prefer heavier versions, such as the telescopic stun batons which serve dual functions while other prefer the sleek, easy-to-carry designs that can be stored anywhere or the Blast Knuckles that can be worn. There are now stun guns for many types of people and situations.
